MOT REMINDER SERVICE LAUNCHED

A test version of a new government service has launched to remind drivers by text message and email when their MOT is due.

The GOV.UK service, developed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), makes it easy to get a reminder every year when your vehicle’s MOT is due.
When you sign up, you’ll get a reminder:
  • 4 weeks before your MOT is due
  • 2 weeks before your MOT is due, if you still haven’t had it tested
You’ll also get alerts that your vehicle no longer has an MOT.
You just need the vehicle’s number plate (registration number) and a mobile phone number or email address.
You’ll get a reminder every year until you unsubscribe.
Research by DVSA has revealed that around 28% of cars will be overdue at any one time. Most of these are down to drivers forgetting to get it done, rather than deliberately avoiding having the test done.
If you drive a vehicle without a valid MOT, you’re breaking the law. The only exceptions are to drive it:
  • to or from somewhere to be repaired
  • to a pre-arranged MOT test
You’re also risking your own life and the lives of your passengers and other road users.
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.

COMBAT STRESS

There is often a long delay between Veterans leaving the military and seeking help. In 1994 the average delay seeking help for Service-related mental health conditions was 24 years. By 2014 this had reduced to 12 years.

Through their work, and that of the military chain of command and other mental health charities, Combat Stress are breaking down the stigma around mental illness, leading to more Veterans feeling able to come forward.

For 96 years they have been there for the military community and will be for decades to come. If you or a member of your family served in the UK Armed Forces and need to talk about mental health, please call the 24-hour Helpline on 0800 138 1619.

NPOWER LAUNCHES 'EVERYDAY HEROES FIX' NEW TARIFF

npower have launched ‘Everyday Heroes Fix’, a new tariff exclusively for employees of the emergency services, NHS and Armed Forces, who hold either Blue Light Card or Defence Discount Service memberships. The tariff is on average npower’s most competitive deal* and fixes energy prices until December 2018, offering these everyday heroes a great deal on their energy and protects them from price rises until the end of next year.

The tariff is exclusively available to Blue Light Card or Defence Discount Service members, regardless of whether they are a new or existing npower customer, pay by Direct Debit or on receipt of bill, as long as they manage their account online. The npower offer is available by logging on to defencediscountservice.co.uk.

Anne Chappell Smith, Head of Partnerships at npower, said: “Our new Everyday Heroes Fix is a first-of-its-kind tariff which has been created to give our best price to the nation’s unsung heroes. We wanted to come up with a great product for military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, ministry of defence and healthcare providers to recognise their special contributions to our community.

“Should they wish to choose our most competitive tariff, these everyday heroes will benefit from a fix deal, greater price certainty and security to help plan and budget their energy costs over the course of the next 18 months.”

Tom Dalby, Head of Defence Discount Service said “We are extremely pleased that npower is recognising our everyday heroes.  Those in the Emergency Services, NHS and Armed Forces work hard for our communities and within our communities and it is great that npower, as an energy provider, are recognising what these wonderful people do.”

USING SOCIAL MEDIA - A GUIDE FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL

The use of social media is accepted by Defence and, when

used appropriately, should be encouraged.

The issue we face is not why or how we use social media, but how
well we use it.
The government has produced a useful guide that tells you what is
and isn’t acceptable social media behavior for military personnel.

Click here to read the full guide.
